Fundraising Guide
Violence respects no boundaries.
Each of us deserves to live without fear, day to day, in our family, our school or our
community. CAVEAT works very hard to make that happen through prevention education,
justice reform and victims rights advocacy.
Many of you have asked what you can do to help. This very important work we do for the
benefit of all Canadians comes with a cost. Help us make our country just a little bit
safer by organizing a fundraising event on our behalf.
With your help, we will be able to continue to do valuable research and to insist on fair laws that
respect the rights and dignity of all Canadians.
Your school (organization) will be a leader that is respected and valued. You will get
tremendous satisfaction from knowing that you have indeed made a difference. And you will
have a lot of fun!
If not me, then who?
If not now, then when?
The opportunities for fund raising events are limited only by your imagination. Whether you
are considering a bake sale or a banquet dinner, we would like to encourage and support you
from the beginning. That's why we created the NO FEAR! Guide. It will STEP you through the
general things that usually apply to fund raising events. But, if you have any questions,
comments, or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact us.
For Schools ...
Walk this way...
STEP 1: Strength in Numbers!
In order to successfully carry out any event, you need a group of dedicated volunteers. Of course,
the size of this group is dependent on the tasks at hand. (i.e. a bake sale will require a few people,
where as a dance-a-thon will require an army of volunteers) The core group of people will be your
planning committee. Agree to meet regularly until the event is planned. Perhaps regular lunch hour
meetings will work well. As well, you'll need a teacher that will support your event. (that way,
you will have a classroom to use for meeting as well!)
STEP 2: The Storm of the Brain! (more commonly known as BRAINSTORMING!)
Give free reign to your imaginations. Don't throw out any ideas at first. The wackiest idea might make
the greatest way of raising funds. Remember that the idea should, in the end, be realistic. Realize
the number of people you have to work with and your limited resources.
Here's just a few ideas that we came up with to get the creative juices flowing:
- Auctions
- Dinner Dances
- Theme Parties
- Arts and Crafts Shows
- Costume Parties
- Tournaments
- Bake Sales
- Celebrity Appearances
- Theatrical Events
- Barbecues
- Sport Auctions
- Carnivals
- Beach Parties
- Skating Parties
- Walk-a-Thon (or other 'a-thons')
- Food Festivals
- Rummage Sales
- Raffles
- Holiday Celebrations
- Home Team Sporting Challenges
- Rummage Sales
- Contests (i.e. jello eating)
STEP 3: We like to be in the KNOW, too!
Contact the Speers Society to let us know the details of your event.
STEP 4: Shoot for the Stars (or at least one!)
Be sure to set clearly defined goals; especially in in the financial area (how much you want to raise?).
Basically the 5 W's: why your doing the event; what the event is; who will be attending (your target
audience - who's most likely to attend? All grades, or just the seniors) and who will be organizing;
when the event will take place; where it will take place (i.e. cafeteria); and you should probably
describe the 'how' as well (talk about the fact that you've been in touch with CAVEAT , etc.) Then all
you have to do is plan, plan, plan. Remember to try and keep costs down, so you can meet your donation
goal.
STEP 5: Read the Red Tape!
Don't forget that you will need permission from your principal to do any event within school time.
Make an appointment with your teacher advisor, the principal and a few of your planning team. In
your proposal - just like in your goals, clearly lay out the 5 W's: why your doing the event; what
the event is; who will be attending and who will be organizing; when the event will take place;
where it will take place (i.e. cafeteria); and you should probably describe the 'how' as well (talk
about the fact that you've been in touch with CAVEAT , etc.)
STEP 6: Publicity... Publicity.... PROMO!
You may have the greatest fund raiser that the world has ever seen, but if no one knows about it,
it's potential could be wasted. Ensure to publicize your event in as many venues as possible (posters,
newspapers, P.A. announcements, word of mouth). Be creative! Use your artistic students to design a
campaign that will get everybody's attention. But remember: if you're using the CAVEAT name, we would
appreciate knowing.
STEP 7: Just Do it!
Relax. We're confident that everything will go well. Don't forget: every little bit helps! We really
appreciate what you're doing! HAVE FUN!
STEP 8: How d'ya do?
Evaluation and debriefing are essential for any event - even if you may not do that exact type of
event again. We would like to know the things that worked well, and those that did not. That way,
we can help the next person/group who wants to put on an event. Surveys and discussion groups work
well.
STEP 9: THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU
Accept our sincere appreciation! Be sure to pass on our appreciation to your team and all those who
participated. You have done a wonderful thing for your community and the rest of Canada! Your money
will go towards the building of a safer, more just society. Thanks again.
