“TOOLS OF AWARENESS”
We are proud and excited to introduce
“Tools of Awareness”, a unique and timely program that will develop
awareness of positive peer relationships, identify warning signs symptomatic of
abusive relationships and suggest support activities and resources to sustain
healthy choices. “Tools of Awareness” combines the award-winning film “A
Love That Kills” with a concise and user-friendly guide, to be used in schools
as well as by police services and youth-support organizations across the
country.
“A
Love That Kills” is a powerful documentary that chronicles the
story of Monica, who was brutally murdered by her former boyfriend
and identifies warning signs of abusive relationships. This
international award-winning film has been praised by thousands of
young people, educators and police across Canada and has become the
National Film Board’s most requested film.
We are now developing a facilitator guide to
enhance the film “A Love That Kills” so that safe behaviour
choices can be sustained over the long term. The guide will prepare
teachers, students and communities to help prevent abusive and
violent relationships among young people by opening discussion and
encouraging follow-up activities. It will assist youth to make
informed choices and will provide opportunities for youth to engage
other youth in abuse prevention efforts.
The Speers Society has been recently established as
a non-profit organization, committed to the prevention of youth
relationship abuse. We are proud of our association with CAVEAT and
pleased to have established partnerships with the Ministry of
Justice, and the Ontario Women’s Directorate as well as the
private sector, in order to develop the facilitator guide and to
implement it into school curriculum across Canada.
PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT
Phase
One
“A Love That Kills”
Film…………………………………………………..…………………………....complete
Phase one of our program has been successfully completed.
“A Love That Kills” is a powerful, Leo Award–winning documentary that
tells the tragic story of Monica, a nineteen year old woman who was murdered by
her former boyfriend. The twenty-minute film helps to identify the warning signs
of relationship abuse, especially in young people, and demonstrates the damage
it causes emotionally and physically. It is a catalyst for discussion and action
and is appropriate for use by educators, police, victim services and community
organizations.
Phase
Two
“A Love That
Kills” Promotional
Tour…………………………………………………………….….complete
A cross-Canada promotional tour
for “A Love That Kills” has been
completed. The 21-day tour allowed Dawna to meet with youth, teachers and
community members from across the country and to listen to their valued
feedback. The response was overwhelmingly positive.
Phase Three
Facilitator Guide
Phase
three of the program will be the development and design of a facilitator guide
that will include suggested lesson plans, follow-up activities and community
resources. The guide will be developed to enhance the learning opportunity of
the documentary “A Love That Kills”. Focus groups will be established to
solicit input from youth, parents, educators, and other professionals in order
to develop a program for young people Grade 6+. Specific evaluation criteria
that reflect the goals and objectives will be established.
Phase Four
Pilot Implementation, Evaluations, and Revisions
The complete program will be
tested in 10 schools in 4 provinces. Care will be taken to ensure that pilot
schools are different in social and economic composition. As we test the model
throughout the country, we will establish relationships and liaisons with
educators, police, school boards and community groups who will be key to program
revision and future program implementation. Based on evaluations of the course
segments the facilitator guide will be adapted and refined.
Phase Five
Promotion and Marketing
A
comprehensive promotion and marketing campaign will be initiated to encourage
implementation of the complete program in schools and community agencies
throughout Canada.
