Over 3,000,000 Canadians have signed a petition supporting CAVEAT, Canadians Against Violence, a non-profit grass roots organization, in advocating changes to the justice system to ensure that the protection of the public is the overriding goal of the law.

MEDIA RELEASE -January 13, 2000
OUR CHILDREN ARE A POWERLESS GROUP

SOCIETY HAS A SPECIAL RESPONSIBILITY TO PROTECT THEM FROM ABUSE

CAVEAT to intervene in R v Sharpe at the Supreme Court of Canada

January 18th and 19th, 2000.

Child pornography devalues, degrades and marginalizes children & portrays them as objects for the sexual exploitation and entertainment of adults.

Child pornography is a direct product of sexual abuse and exploitation of children which results in serious, often life long, even life threatening consequences for the physical, psychological and social health and development of the child.

What concerns us are not the individuals who maintain private diaries, private drawings or sketches kept locked in their homes but rather the extreme violence and graphic sexual violation as reflected by these materials which cannot be dismissed as ėmere works of the imagination".

There is a level of harm which can be objectively measured and weighed against community standards of tolerance which gives society both the right and the responsibility to draw a line.

We at CAVEAT are left responding to the tragic harm and hurt caused by this material. We do not have time for the niceties of abstract academic discussions which for us are overwhelmed by an overriding realty of harm.
