News Release - August 11, 1996. RE: Clifford Olson's eligibility to
apply for a section 745 judicial review.
For Immediate Release
CANADA REMEMBERS OLSON VICTIMS
August 11, 1996 (Burlington) Since 1981, when he was sentenced
to eleven concurrent life sentences, serial child killer Clifford Robert
Olson has repeatedly used the media and the Government to torment the families
of his eleven victims. Tomorrow, as he becomes eligible to apply for a Section
745 judicial review, the Government will provide him with yet another public
venue.
Section 745 of the Criminal Code grants first degree murderers the right
to have their 25 year parole ineligibility period reviewed after serving
only 15 years of a "life" sentence. In June, 1996, with Olson's
fifteenth anniversary looming, Ottawa unsuccessfully attempted to push through
last-minute amendments to s.745; amendments which fell far short of Canadians'
demand for the total repeal of s.745.
On this day, we remember not the killer, but his victims and their families:
Sigrun Charlotte Arnd, 18 Terry Lyn Carson, 15 Louise Chartrand, 17 Ada
Court, 14 Colleen Daignault, 13 Daryn Johnsrude, 16 Raymond King, 15 Judy
Kozma, 14 Simon Partington, 9 Christine Weller, 12 Sandra Wolfsteiner, 16
These victims have no "right of review" and cannot appeal. Canadians
remember these eleven victims and all victims of violent crime.
