A message from CAVEAT President Priscilla de Villiers:

CAVEAT's first National Membership Drive got underway February,1996. We really need your help to make this successful.

In the past you have supported me and my family in many ways, whether personally helping in the search for my daughter Nina, in spirit through our terrible ordeal or in so many other ways in the times following. I want you to know that your caring has meant a lot to me and my family.

Over the past four years, I have met so many other families who have also been touched by violence. Their lives, as ours, will never be the same. All of us who have been victimized, and those who realize we are all potential victims, are fighting through CAVEAT to make Canada a safer place to live. We do this out of love for our neighbour, not revenge. None of us wants you or your family to have to live through the terrible, preventable tragedies that we have witnessed too often.

Since the fall of 1991, I have committed myself to Canadians Against Violence Everywhere Advocating its Termination (CAVEAT). I cannot do it alone. Your membership means a great deal to us; not only for the financial assistance it represents, but especially the strength it adds to our voice. We have found that our membership number is of great importance to our government and that is why I am calling upon you now.

We are requesting that you help us by asking your relatives, neighbours, co-workers etc. to take out a CAVEAT membership ($10.00 students/seniors, $25.00 Individuals, $35.00 families-all family members are counted in our numbers) by calling 1-800-6 CAVEAT (228328). The operator can complete the transaction over the telephone, either by VISA, MASTERCARD or by invoice. All members will receive the STOPWATCH newsletter to stay abreast of the issues.

If each one of you would get 10 new members, our voice will be much stronger and our chances of attaining our goal for a violent free, peaceful society will increase ten-fold.

If you prefer you could send us your list of potential candidates and our volunteers could follow up. We will try and follow-up with a phone call to see if you need assistance in answering any of your friends' questions.

For this year, 1996, our main objective is to get effective High Risk Offender legislation in place. Christopher Stephenson, Melanie Carpenter, Wanda Woodward and Pamela Cameron, to name but a few victims, would all be alive today, if more stringent legislation were in effect. We are tired of promises and platitudes. We see that our society is beyond the meek acceptance of the status quo.

In order for us to demand action, it is imperative to increase our membership to get voters enlisted to change these vital public safety issues. So, even while we thank you for your generous assistance in the past, we now must ask for your help once again to enlist your family and friends to join with us. We urgently need your help now.

Sincerely

Priscilla de Villiers
President

P.S. Please call your friends and get them on board now, it's a matter of life and death.
