CBC IN CONFLICT WITH CANADIANS

BURLINGTON, Ontario, April 7, 1995

CAVEAT, calls upon the Prime Minister, the Right Honourable Jean Chretien, to investigate whether CBC's involvement in the Bernardo proceedings, concerning the videos, is within the mandate of the CBC on behalf of the people of Canada. The determined assault by the CBC, in concert with the independent media, against the French and Mahaffy families, and as a result, all Canadian children and women, requires such an investigation.

CAVEAT has retained Timothy Danson and Professor Kathleen Mahoney to make application to the CRTC to determine whether the actions of the CBC are in contravention of broadcasting regulations.

CAVEAT endorses the independence of the media and the essential role that vigilant scrutiny plays in the public's right to see justice done. We question the tone, and the tactics of the unprecedented attack launched against victims of violent crime, the children and women of Canada, and therefore the public.
